Evil is usually contrasted with good. In some religions, evil is an active force, often personified as an entity such as Satan or Angra Mainyu. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, evil consists of breaking the rules given by God to man, and suffering is God's punishment for breaking those rules. The rules may be given for man's protection ("Thou shalt not kill"), or to honor God ("Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy"), but they may also be arbitrary, as in the Jewish law against wearing clothing made of two kinds of cloth. Similar ideas are found in many other religions and culture.
